Recently, Windows 10 began to bundle an ASIO driver with all machines running Realtek on-board sound drivers. This driver, the Realtek HD ASIO driver will always crash Smaart when Smaart checks for audio devices.

I'm also far from an audio expert so this could also belong in the sub. But every time I reinstall ableton I use it for awhile with no real problems but after awhile, something always comes up makes me need to install ASIO. Its hard to remember cuz its been awhile since I've re-installed and had ASIO for awhile but I think the most recent issue I randomly ran into was one day my mic not showing up under hardware prefs. Then I installed ASIO and ASIO could recognize it. But ASIO really annoys me because it disables sound for my whole PC outside of ableton which leads to numerous inconveniences. I have 2 monitors and would like to able to watch a tutorial while experimenting with my mix. I also feel like sometimes ASIO doesn't respond to my PC's volume controls and I have to control the PC's volume output is with the master track I just switched back to my mobo's Realtek audio and to my untrained ear I don't hear any difference in playback.
Is there any drawback to mixing my songs through the Realtek driver?I hear ASIO has better mic latency but I notice its still not perfect. I know I can tweak the ms but I'd rather just position the wav myself than trust the software. What exactly do I need it for? It is my understanding that windows dynamically adjusts the latency based on processor use and allows multiple sound sources to work together automatically and be adjusted on the fly. This is no good for audio work. What KS and ASIO do is bypass this and allow to set an exact latency and to help keep it consistent it excludes other audio streams.

What you can do as a compromise is to use a virtual audio cable or program like voicemeeter (FREE), that can feed audio to another stream or combine multiple types of audio streams together. So voicemeeter allows you to use WDM, MME, KS, and ASIO all together and adjust each one individually and output to multiple streams. I use realtek, asio4all and voicemeeter - output to headphones and speakers at the same time, with windows audio and asio at the same time, it even allows audio and midi over my network that i send to multiple pc's. The main use I use it for is to have lots of different audio inputs like mic, music, game, discord, ableton, be able to adjust the volumes of each add effects and output to differnt audio streams so that people on voicechat only hear my mic and not the whole system audio yet i can still record in OBS with each audio channel separated and be able to use ableton with asio.
